Musso: history of wines and vineyards

for generations

The Musso Farm is based in Barbaresco, in the Langhe del Vino. In this village dedicated to wine, the company has developed its history, whose traits have often coincided with more general events that have marked the journey of the entire society.

The Musso winery was founded in 1929, a year that coincided with one of the most critical moments in the Italian and world economy, the year of the “great depression”, which brought down myths and structures that seemed invincible. And yet, Sebastiano Musso did not lose heart, he found the strength to react and found a small winery in Barbaresco. He continued the profession of his fathers, the cultivation of vineyards, but he also began to vinify and produce wine.

In the '60s, his son Augusto decided to support his father Sebastiano in the management of the company. Period in which Italy had its own law on wines of origin and this would have given more certainty to those who produced and those who consumed, valuing the products and their quality. Subsequently, in 1966, Barbaresco had become DOC and this recognition had aroused great interest.

After another fifteen years, Augusto's son, Valter Musso, a wine technician graduated from the historic Alba Wine School, joined the company. Today he is the helmsman of the production structure.

Over time, the Musso Farm has added other vineyards, two new pieces of land to Pora and Rio Sordo and has expanded the market, thanks to the new horizons that allowed us to see beyond national borders. Today, the protagonists are still men and their generations. Not at odds with each other, but in total synergy, valuing each one's best abilities

Musso: fine and recognized wines

The Musso winery is located in the heart of the town of Barbaresco. Here all the phases of the winemaking process take place. Each of them is conducted in a dedicated environment: the steel containers in the vinification rooms, the wooden barrels in the spaces intended for maturation and the bottle for the aging time.

Even the vineyards, about 10 hectares in total, are mainly on the hills of Barbaresco: planted with the varieties of the territorial tradition (Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Freisa) and with the universal Chardonnay, the Musso company's vineyards are located in four of the most prestigious Geographic Mentions in the country: Pora, Rio Sordo, Cavanna and Ronchi.

The main protagonist of the entire viticultural heritage is the Nebbiolo grape variety, with about 50% of the total area. The remaining share is divided among the other five varieties. The result of the work in the vineyard and in the cellar are the wines, an average of 80,000 bottles per year. 40% is Barbaresco, a great red with structure and long resistance to time. Alongside Barbaresco, there are four other red and two white wines: from Nebbiolo the company also produces Langhe Nebbiolo DOC. Then, always among the reds, from Barbera to Barbera d'Alba DOC, from Dolcetto the Dolcetto d'Alba DOC and from Freisa the Langhe Freisa DOC. Finally, the two white wines, the Langhe Chardonnay Doc and the Roero Arneis DOCG.

The wines signed by the Musso winery are wines that express the heart of Barbaresco: wines recognized and awarded also by The Wine Hunter Awards.
