Organic wine: have you ever tried it? Find out what it is and try one now

Organic products, and in particular wine, have gained more and more importance in recent years, partly out of trend, partly because of greater customer awareness.

Today, however, they are much more: a significant reality of Italian agri-food, an important pillar on the market. In addition, more and more consumers want to approach a conscious and sustainable lifestyle.

Some companies previously adopted sustainable policies and production methods, while many others have moved to organic and have given more and more space and relevance to “BIO”, adapting their way of operating with respect for the environment and for workers.

But what is organic? How are the products considered BIO? Below we explain to you what is behind an organic wine and why it stands out from other wines.

Organic wine: here is what this term means and how it is produced

First of all, it is important to know what Organic Agriculture is, which is adopted by various companies to obtain certified organic products.

Organic Agriculture is a model of sustainable development, based on the principles of safeguarding and valuing resources and on respect for the environment and consumer health. This model therefore has a 360° view of the entire scenario surrounding the production.

As far as wine is concerned, this method of cultivation leads to planning the vinification and to making conscious choices right from the vineyard.

Since organic agriculture believes in the potential of a vineyard without chemistry, it avoids the forcing of chemical fertilization and systemic pesticides that on the one hand stimulate the quantitative production of the plant, but on the other hand lower the quality, impoverishing the relationship that exists between soil, plant and climate, a balance necessary for the development of a strong vine that produces healthy grapes.

Organic wine is therefore nothing more than the fruit of this model of sustainable development, a product deriving from a cultivation method that has precise and detailed rules to respect.

On March 9, 2012, the official gazette of the European Union published European Regulation 203/2012, which made it possible to regulate the organic wine sector.

This legislation also defines the methods of vinification and allows the European logo to be carried on the label, for companies certified by an authorized body.

Before the European Regulation, it was possible to speak of wine “coming from organic grapes”, while now the appellation of Organic Wine can be assumed thanks to the possibility of certifying as organic the entire process of vinification and transformation of the grapes.

The correct definition, therefore, of Organic Wine is as follows: wine from 100% organic grapes grown without the use of synthetic chemical agents in the vineyards; in the cellar, vinification must take place with the limited use of sulfites and certified organic oenological products.

Why prefer organic wine to normal wine: an ethical choice

As far as organoleptic characteristics are concerned, there is no distinction between an organic wine and a “normal” cru. On the contrary, we find important differences in the respective production methods.

Organic wine is a completely natural and genuine wine. Synthetic chemical agents are not used for the entire production process. Organic vines are cultivated in their habitat, wild herbs grow around them and biodiversity is developed.

The fruit of this process is a balanced grape, rich in all those typical characteristics of the territory in which it grows.
Consequently, the wine that derives from these grapes is natural, healthy, genuine and of quality; it respects the environment, the ecosystem, but also the consumer's health.

In fact, many consumers are starting to prefer to buy Organic Wine for various reasons. The companies that produce it are very controlled and must comply with regulations, so those who buy feel safer.
Those who care about the environment prefer this wine because the impact of growing organic grapes is much lower than other non-organic ones.

Respect for the environment and for workers and the effort necessary to pursue the goal make those who produce organic wine more committed in the eyes of consumers.

They therefore choose to reward those who invest in this type of product, because they are carried by a real passion.

Now that you know how much effort and hard work go into a bottle of Organic Wine, you just have to try one!
